COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course aims to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to effectively function as community paralegals, empowering them to provide essential legal support and guidance within their communities. Participants will be systematically guided through key aspects of community paralegal work, enabling them to understand their role in promoting access to justice and legal awareness. By the end of the course, participants will be able to articulate the principles of community legal aid and identify successful strategies for resolving common legal issues at the community level.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course targets individuals interested in or currently working in community development, social justice, human rights, and legal aid sectors, who seek to gain or refresh their knowledge and tools to provide paralegal services to their communities.

TRAINING FOCUS

The course will focus on the following key topics;

  • Introduction to Community Paralegalism and Access to Justice

  • Legal Research and Documentation for Community Paralegals

  • Human Rights and Constitutional Law in the Community Context

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms at the Community Level

  • Basic Legal Aid and Referral Services

  • Ethical Considerations and Professionalism for Community Paralegals

COURSE OUTCOME

At the end of the course, participants will be able to;

  • Understand the role and scope of community paralegal practice.

  • Conduct basic legal research and document cases effectively.

  • Identify human rights issues and apply relevant legal frameworks in community settings.

  • Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes within communities.

  • Provide basic legal information and appropriate referrals to legal services.

  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards in paralegal work.

COURSE FEE

The cost of the course is Kes. 58,500 inclusive of VAT and registration fee (covers tuition fees, course materials, stationery, lunch and refreshments).

Money should be deposited in the School’s account: (Account No. 202 2029 110 ABSA Bank of Kenya, Absa Bank Kenya PLC, Plaza Branch, Nairobi, Kenya) and the bank slip or evidence of electronic funds transfer presented to the Finance Office.

CPD POINTS

Members of the Law Society of Kenya who attend and complete the training will be entitled, on payment of extra 1,000.00 to be awarded 3 CPD points. Payment of this sum shall be effected during the training, as will be directed by the organizers of the training.
