ABOUT THE COURSE

The Legal Audit and Compliance Course that includes Certification of Lawyers as Legal Auditors is a 5-day course that has the objective of equipping the participant with the practical skills to understand the content and process of legal audit, and to undertake legal audit with professionalism and confidence. The course was conceptualized, developed and has been delivered by the Kenya School of Law since 2010. The goal of the course is to transform the management & operations of institutions through strict adherence to constitutional, statutory, policy and administrative and regulatory requirements, as well as best practices.

The participant will learn about legal audits: the objectives and benefits, preparation of terms of reference, proposal, inception report, data collection instruments, report, legal compliance matrix and such. The Course will have many sessions devoted to practical activities simulating the various stages of an actual legal audit exercise.

Each participant who attends the entire the 5 days of the training will be entitled to receive a certificate of participation.

For participants who are Advocates of the High Court of Kenya, they may opt to over and above the 5 days training undertake a practical project off-site, that will be assessed and marked under the guidance of the trainers, to ensure that the participant is well-equipped to carry out legal audit assignment from the beginning to the end. This category of participants who undertake the project for assessment will be certified as legal auditors if they score 50% or above. The project runs beyond the training period but has to be completed within two

(2) weeks after the 5 days training.

 

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the Course the participants will be equipped as follows—

For any participant in the 5 days of the training, they will be equipped to:

a)     Advise their respective organizations on the value of legal compliance and how prepare them for external compliance audits;

b)    Determine the steps for coming up with institutional legal risk parameters;

c)     Describe the process of development of terms of reference and proposal for a legal audit;

d)    Prepare for an opening meeting and compile an inception report;

e)     Prepare a work plan, audit schedule, and data collection instruments, including questionnaires and interview guides.

f)      Prepare and populate a legal audit matrix and implementation matrix;

g)    Report on findings of  the legal audit;

h)    Evaluate an external auditor’s report.

For those taking the certification aspect of the course, they will be equipped to:

(a)   Advise clients or their respective organizations on legal compliance requirements and prepare them for external compliance audits;

(b)  Determine institutional legal risk parameters;

(c)   Develop terms of reference and proposal for a legal audit;

(d)  Prepare for an opening meeting and do an inception report;

(e)   Prepare work plan, audit schedule, and data collection instruments, including questionnaires, interview guides, etc.;

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

The course is intended for the following:

Advocates of the High Court of Kenya intent on carrying out legal compliance audits as a consultancy.

a)     In house counsel seeking to be equipped to coordinate legal compliance audits within their organisations.

b)    Officers serving in Strategy, Planning, Quality Assurance and Risk, Human Resource Management, Supply Chain, Finance, and Internal Audit roles in their respective organisations who intend to gain knowledge and skills for better compliance within their respective functions.

INTENDED OUTCOMES

It is expected that at the end of the course a participant should be able to :

(a)   For those who take the 5 day training, participate actively in a leading role in a legal compliance audit of their organisation.

(b)  For those who take the post training project and get assessed for certification as a legal auditor, effectively conduct a legal compliance audit from the point of writing a proposal for a legal audit to presentation of the final report.

 

TRAINERS

The School has assembled a team of experienced trainers, advocates of the High Court of Kenya and certified legal audit trainers, with extensive practical experience in carrying out of legal compliance audits.

 

CERTIFICATION

A participant who attends all the days of the 5 day training will get a certificate of particiption.

A participant who attends the entire course and completes the project work that forms part of the course and upon assessment scores above 50%, they, will be certified as a legal auditor.

YOUR INVESTMENT

Kshs. 105,000/- inclusive of VAT and registration fee for participants from East Africa. Participants from outside East Africa will pay USD 1,500. The fee covers tuition fees, course materials, stationery, lunch and refreshments.

IMPORTANT NOTE

(a)   Where a person who has registered for the course pulls out within 7 days to the date of training, the School shall deduct a sum not exceeding 25% of the tuition fee to cover administrative expenses of the School;

(b)  Much as we have confidence of attaining quorum for this course, we wish to caution that the course will proceed only upon a minimum of 20 persons registering, hence a person should verify this position at least 14 days before the training starts. The course may be rescheduled if need be.
