Course Overview:

A 40-hour mediation training course equips aspiring mediators with foundational conflict resolution skills, negotiation strategies, and ethical frameworks. Delivered over 5 days, it relies on hands-on role-plays and simulations.

The syllabus is divided into these core modules:

1. Introduction to Dispute Resolution (4 Hours)

  • Definition and core principles of mediation.

  • Differences between mediation, arbitration, litigation, and negotiation.

  • Understanding the role and neutrality of the mediator.

2. Conflict Dynamics & Theory (4 Hours)

  • Foundational theories of conflict.

  • Identifying the underlying causes and drivers of disputes (interests vs. positions).

  • Cross-cultural and psychological perspectives in mediation.

3. Core Communication Skills (8 Hours)

  • Active listening, paraphrasing, summarizing, and reframing.

  • Managing emotions, de-escalation techniques, and building trust and rapport.

  • Power balancing to ensure fairness between disputing parties.

4. The Mediation Process & Techniques (16 Hours)

  • Opening: Setting the stage, explaining the mediation agreement, and establishing ground rules.

  • Exploring: Allowing parties to state their narratives and venting.

  • Negotiation & Brainstorming: Generating options, testing reality, and structuring offers.

  • Concluding: Drafting settlement agreements and managing impasses.

5. Ethics & Best Practices (4 Hours)

  • Ethical standards, confidentiality, and impartiality.

  • Legal frameworks for court-annexed mediation.

  • Case management and setting up an independent practice.

6. Practical Role-Plays & Assessment (4 Hours)

  • Participating in and managing mock mediations under supervision.

  • Peer-to-peer coaching and feedback.

  • Final practical and/or written assessments for professional accreditation.
